Re-Interpreting Last Phrase in Gettysburg Address
…that
this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom, that government of the
people, by the people, and for the people shall not perish from this earth.
Abraham
Lincoln (1809-1865), Gettysburg Address, November 19, 1864
Tomorrow marks 150 years since Abraham Lincoln
delivered his memorable 272 word address.
Today, in his closing phrase, he would not say.
-
… that
this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom that government of
the bureaucracy, by the bureaucracy, and for the bureaucracy shall not perish
from this earth.
-
…
that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom, that government
of the health law, by the health law, and for the health law shall not perish
from this earth.
Instead Lincoln would say again ...that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom that
government of the people, by the people, and for the people shall not perish from
this earth.
Lincoln would insist that the people – not the
government bureaucracy, not the health law and not those who carry out the law’s mandates
– will decide what freedom means and what counts in the end.

In
November 2014 elections, government of the people, by the people, and for the
people will decide who’s in charge of the nation’s destiny
